The State of Ransomware in 2021

Recorded November 9, 2021

This old but ever-evolving threat continues to plague organizations worldwide. In recent years, we have seen threat actors taking on more sophisticated business models and extortion tactics, and it certainly feels like not a day goes by that we don’t read about systems being rendered unusable as a result of a ransomware attack. This year only, we have seen ransomware groups successfully carry out high-profile attacks, including those on SolarWinds, Colonial Pipeline, and Kaseya.

Modern ransomware differs from traditional ransomware in that the approach is very much targeted-like, as opposed to a more “shotgun approach.” Threat actors have upped their game and use more levels of extortion to further pressure organizations into paying ransom in the unfortunate event of an attack, including publicly naming and shaming their victims. As ransomware continues to evolve, your security strategy must as well. How did we get here and where did it all start?

Tune in with Trend to learn more about:

  • The state of ransomware in 2021, including a brief history of ransomware.
  • How ransomware attacks unfold.
  • How you can avoid being a victim of a ransomware attack.

Joining us will be Lucas Van Den Berg, who is a member of Trend Micro's incident response team, who will share insights from an incident response analyst's perspective – how red teaming works and what actions you can take how to develop an effective security posture.

Lucas Van Den Berg

Incident Response Analyst, Trend Micro

Ransomware has been detonated within your infrastructure and your business operations are at a standstill. The servers, workstations, but also the backups are encrypted. Nobody can work anymore. The factories stop manufacturing and the offices are closed. The ransomware operators ask 15 million euro's for the decryption key. At that point, Trend Micro Incident Response is called in to get organisations back on track. Both technical and organisational. And we ensure that it can never come that far again.

Within an incident, my role is to maintain an overview and to communicate clearly with the customer's management team and steer our own forensic investigation team. It’s my job to quickly triage a crisis situation and know how to make the right decisions and take actions. Together with the incident response team we drive our common goal: 'back to business as usual, as quickly as possible'.
