The future of security
02/11/2017  /  09:30 - 10:00 UTC

It’s no longer science fiction. The internet-of-things - (IoT) - is turning people’s homes into automated living spaces and Gartner has estimated that more than 20.8 billion IoT devices will be in use by 2020.

2016 was a record breaking year for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks from compromised IoT. The Mirai botnet launched massive and widespread attacks which badly affected notable sites like Twitter, Airbnb, Spotify and Netflix.

Soon, smart technologies will be heavily woven into the city’s fabric so that public services and infrastructure work together more efficiently. By going smart, cities also welcome new risks. If not planned correctly, cities could put their operations, their citizens' privacy, and public safety at risk.

Beyond the traditional PC, there is an increasing number of smart home devices connected to home networks including IP Cameras, TVs, NAS (network storage) units, smartphones, tablets, printers and so on. Many devices have security issues which could be used to take control of the devices or network and leak private data.
